China supports efforts to maintain stability of the euro and European economy: Wen Jiabao

BEIJING, April 18 (Xinhua) - Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said today at the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel that China will strongly support efforts to maintain stability of the euro and the European economy.

During a telephone conversation, the two leaders exchanged views on the solutions to the debt crisis in the eurozone.

Wen expressed his appreciation for the efforts and progress of the European Union (EU), corresponding member of the EU and the international community to resolve the debt crisis.

This fact demonstrates the effectiveness of Europe's own efforts to resolve the debt problem, Wen added.

The premier said China has always had confidence in the economy of Europe and the stability of the single currency in the region. While the EU to remain united and implement appropriate policies prevail over the crisis and return to the path of steady recovery, said Wen.

The international financial crisis is not over and the economic and financial stability of Europe is of great importance to economic stability and sustained global recovery, Wen said.

China not only help Europe to do what is supposed to do, also contribute to the International Monetary Fund and other major international financial agencies in their important roles to play, he said.

Wen briefed Merkel on the economic situation in Europe and on recent progress to resolve the debt crisis in Europe.
