China: launch of a fleet of oceanographic research

The National Oceanic Affairs (NIAC) announced Wednesday, April 18 the establishment of a national fleet of oceanographic research to improve the capacity of countries in the field.

The fleet comprises a total of 19 vessels, including 11 ocean research vessels with a capacity of 1500 tons. These vessels belong to the Bureau of National Affairs ocean, at the Academy of Sciences of China (ASC), the Ministry of Education and other government agencies and institutions with maritime interests.

According to the National Office, the main mission of the fleet is to conduct comprehensive oceanographic studies and complete missions that are part of major national research projects.

Cigui Liu, director of NIAC, said on the occasion of the inauguration ceremony of the fleet that it would facilitate the creation of a platform for sharing information ocean.
